The Art Procurer follows the parallel lives of an SS colonel, Rainer Zeitz, whose assignment is to confiscate art from occupied countries and that of an American art professor, Martin Wynerson, whose assignment will be to recover such art post-war. The wartime life of each is complicated by a strong-willed, loving female relative. In Zeitz's case his sly, manipulative cousin, Anna; for Wynerson it is his younger sister, Madeleine. Adding to the mix, Wynerson takes his absent boss's wife for a mistress. Zeitz's and Wynerson's lives intersect at last in post-war Munich and the fate of several European masterpieces hang in the balance.
The Art Procurer Jeff Ridenour 9780989629638 Books
Author Ridenour follows the trail and the shenanigans of Rainer Zeitz, the (sometimes reluctant) SS officer operating under orders from Hitler himself to survey and confiscate art and cultural artifacts from countries invaded by the Nazis. We all know the Nazis perpetrated art theft on a grand scale during WWII, but Ridenour brings us details and puts some faces on the subject. Aside from the historical content--and it is considerable, obviously the result of many hours of research--the characters are painted with a detailed brush. Zeitz is an arrogant and amoral slime who becomes a fugitive in his own country; Martin Wynerson, whose interfamilial relations are nothing if not peculiar, becomes the Good Guy whom you really don't want to like very much.Everything is set against a background that has Germany going from the confident invader of Russia to the rubble piles that Allied bombing made of Berlin.
This is a serious novel, and it asks for serious readers. But serious readers will love it, and learn something in the process.

The Art Procurer Jeff Ridenour 9780989629638 Books Reviews
The Art Procurer by Jeff Ridenour tells the fascinating story of Nazi art theft in World War II. It follows the lives of SS Colonel Rainer Zeitz, as well as an American art professor Martin Wynerson. Each have their own assignments but they both relate to the treasure of art. While Rainer looks to seek out and confiscate such art, Wynerson looks to recover such art. Rainer's cousin Anna plays a key part in this prolific operation as she steals paintings from Hitler's collection due to her job. She is heavily involved in trafficking such items and she is also capable of murder. This novel was written right in the heart of the war and they have a few scrapes along the way. The plot then begins to thicken as Martin begins an affair with the wife of his boss as well as having an incestuous relationship with his sister. The ending is a dramatic climax and it added to the air of suspense throughout.
Jeff Ridenour delivers a powerful yet fascinating insight into the prolific Nazi theft of World War II. The Art Procurer is a hard hitting novel that makes for an eye opening read. As a reader I discovered many things which I did not know on this topic. The link between the main characters brought just the correct balance as the story went from one to the other. The style and the research that went into this novel was second to none. There is also an extra bonus at the end of the novel with the spoiler of book two entitled Sins of the Fathers. It cleverly bridges the gap between 1945 to the era of 1992 with the introduction of new characters. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to any World War II fanatics as it is truly a fascinating read throughout.
