UNRAVELLED is the absorbing story of a marriage challenged by infidelity and the stresses of two world wars. Edward Jamieson fought in WWI. During that time, he had an affair with a woman he never stopped loving even though they lost contact after the war and he went home to Canada where he married Ann and they had two children. A reunion in France re-surfaces both Edward’s war memories and his former lover. As Edward and Ann address these problems, another World War compounds the challenges they face.

Author M.K. Tod’s meticulous research into the battles of both World Wars and the affects these wars had on soldiers and their families makes for reading that will satisfy any reader of historical fiction. We see the effect of Edward’s battle experiences vividly as Tod skillfully moves back and forth between Edward’s present life and his time in the trenches of the Great War. As World War II takes center stage, Edward must face his demons again. Meanwhile, his wife Ann sees the war from another side as she volunteers to work with grieving women and attempts to keep her family and herself together.

Tod shares both Edward and Ann's points of view thoroughly and honestly. Another thing I particularly liked about this novel was how it delved into the impact of secrets on relationships. Secrets caused by infidelity. Secrets caused by war. The characters are complex and the author does not choose the easy way out for anyone. An excellent debut novel.

Unravelled MK Tod 9780991967018 Books Reviews

Unravelled is by M.K. Tod. My attention was brought to this book by these words on the front cover, “two women, two wars, one marriage”, With those words, M.K. Tod caught my attention and I knew I had to read this book and find out what happened. I also chose this book because I am fascinated with anything related to World War I and World War II. Both were watershed events in our history. Next to reading about Holocaust history, this is the time period I would choose to read about. M.K Tod does an excellent job portraying the people living at this time period. Her research into the history of this event is right on target.
Edward Jamieson and his family lived in Toronto, Canada. He worked for the phone company and had since he got out of the army. He had lived through World War I and had come out unscathed on the outside; but he was torn up on the inside. He managed to keep this from his wife, Ann, and everyone else. He didn’t talk about the war with anyone, not even his best friend who had gone through the horror with him. When the invitation to attend the memorial service at Vimy, France, he refused at first. Finally, he decided to go. He didn’t know what to expect and wasn’t prepared for the emotional aspect of being there again. He had also left behind a girl he had intended to marry. He had written to her; but she stopped writing to him. When he looked for her after the war, she wasn’t to be found. He feared she was avoiding him. He had no choice but to travel home. When he and his wife got to Vimy and the memorial ceremony, he looked around and saw Helene. He had to talk to her. He ended up staying here while Ann went to London to wait on him. She had no idea why he had sent her on to London. She knew he was upset; but thought it was about her not the war. She had no idea about his seeing Helene. When she found out, she was devastated and contemplated divorce. After months of indecision and torment, she decided to forgive him and try again.
Edward wanted his marriage to work and worked on it. Things were fine until World War II began. He was called to work on a secret project and not being able to tell Ann what he was doing began causing problems again. Secrets have a way of eroding relationships when they are not shared. It began to erode their marriage once again. What could he do? He had signed a non-Disclosure statement with the Government and could not talk about what he was doing. Ann could only imagine what was happening and what he was doing. What will World War II do to their marriage?
The book is excellent and really makes you want to keep reading
This is an epic, similar in scope and richness of detail to “Gone with Wind” or “War and Peace”. It describes events over a thirty year period and it does it very well. The meticulous research that the author put into this work is evident. The battles of the first and second world wars are described with the same command of the facts and authenticity as the details of life in the home front in Canada during that time. On one hand this is a war story at its best. On the other hand, this is a sensitive and very realistic analysis of a marriage, with infidelity as its major challenge. In this context, it is rare to find such a frank discussion of infidelity and its impact on both spouses. And, yes, like it or not, the conclusion that I drew from the book is that if you choose to cheat, keep it to yourself. The implications of "sharing" your infidelity with your spouse can end the marriage. It is not a coincidence that in this book the man shares his infidelity and the woman does not. She is the smarter of the two. The aspect that I found most interesting about this book is that even though the description of the relationships between the marriage partners feels authentic for the period, it is also very relevant to today's relationships. If you are a lover of historical novels with a thoughtful, deeper, nuanced content, you will enjoy this book.
