I started this book knowing nothing about the author or the content. The first thing I noticed was the scrapbook-come-graphic-novel style storyline and presentation. Pictures, stories, newspaper clippings and regrets. Fears, need-to-know facts, and a yearning for truth. Not desperation, but utter persistence. Not despair, but not a lot of hope.I'll be honest-- most of the reading I do is science, news, current events and technical information online. I am quite busy with work and don't have a lot of time for leisure reading.
This captured me and drew me in. I haven't finished it yet. In some ways I am not ready to finish it. I'm chewing on it in little bits and enjoying the thoughts. I don't know if I'm ready to know the conclusion. Little bits, and little bits. It's the other world I think about from time to time.
This is unique: Whether it's a book, a scrapbook, a biography or something undefined. Interesting, creative, colorful and detailed. I could recommend this to anyone who is interested in a mystery told visually, and rolled out in a way enviable by some of TV's best mysteries and psychological thrillers.
I spent many moments while reading thinking, "Is this real? It's so direct." Many times I spent considering statements and stories thinking: Is this fiction, is it real, or a mixture of both? This made the content very fascinating.
I don't know how much time was put in to building this storyline but if the author could repeat this feat, the expertise is clearly there to assemble an enthralling story via compilation and graphic presentation.
Unique, interesting, consuming. Fully recommended.
By a lot of hard hours and days and years of time spent reviewing, I found myself in the top 10 reviewers on Amazon. This wasn't a goal or self promotion, but by nose-down focused reviewing. I occasionally get contacted by manufacturers or sellers who appreciate my way of reviewing and ask if I'll consider reviewing a product for them, with no obligation or cost. This is one of those products. I assure you that I review what I want, when I want, how I want, in order to share what I feel is the most accurate useful information.

I started reading this book and I couldn't put it down. I read it in 2 sittings. It was so creative and artistic. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see who her father was! Her writing is so frank and honest yet poetic and brilliant. My husband read it after me and he loved it as well. This is really a must buy book. It is unlike anything you have probably ever seen before. It is her memories and it's in scrapbook form. She even has actual documentation and memorabilia of the events. It's very intimate. I can't wait to read her next book. This could seriously make an entertaining movie. BUY IT!
I have to admit this was a "different read" from what I am accustomed too but once I got into it it was easier to enjoy. It is different from an average book, more like a journal or diary but a change once in awhile is good. Cori is a remarkable strong young lady and her words are powerful as the snapshots were. She really put her heart and soul into this book.
The only thing that I was a little disapointed at was it left me hungry for more information about her Mother, her Mother was a fasinating complex individual and I wanted to learn more about her, her early life for example and her days as an exotic dancer and her life as a "biker babe" also what she went to prison for and her comments about being cut from a motion picture and the "bitchiness" of the lead actress, also the story about Jane Fonda and the jail sequence, those are awesome fasinating stories I would of liked to hear more details about, they were just touched upon through, I would love for Cori to write a "sequel" to this, all the information could be made into a 400 page book! I think readers would love to know more about her Mother and siblings and events leading up to it.
Its a very very fast read. I hope one day Cori will write another book about her entire family and "fill in the blanks"! But perhaps that was her intention and it is her book, but a lot of people would love to read more details {like in "stork-bites} Did enjoy through.
Cori Crooks' mom, as you can see by the cover, was one hell of a lady -- dazzling, desperate, completely unreliable and utterly fascinating, especially as she self-presents in the included photos and letters. Cori's taken the remnants of a childhood spent in and out of her mother's "care" and created a masterful collage (many collages, in fact, gorgeous and packed with meaning, on every page of the book) as well as a powerful, beautifully written story -- the story of the search for her true father. The text alone is transcendent; the accompanying art and archives make this an incredibly special book.
This book defies description, or at least I think it does. I can say with certainty that it thwarts my attempts at description, summation, synopsis or any other concise encapsulation. I first read it in little pieces which were doled out all too slowly for how strongly it grabbed my attention, so I can only envy first-time readers who have the benefit of seeing it complete.
Crooks' memoir is a rare combination of brilliant writing, haunting imagery (literal and figurative, see brilliant writing) and enchanting design. I found myself spending as much time studying the backgrounds as the words, and every page takes more than one pass to appreciate. The blend of forms is mesmerizing, the quality of the work is breathtaking, and the story is riveting, moving, heartbreaking and undeniably involving.
I have read this work more than once, and given it as a gift to more than a few. I recommend it unreservedly to anyone; give it a chance. You will not be disappointed.
